About the event
Join the American Society's final Speaker Series event of the year for a talk by Yvonne Bezerra de Mello, the founder & director of Projeto Uerê. Located in the Complexo da Maré, the largest group of favelas in Rio, Projeto Uerê offers young people aged 5 to 18 a specialized education and three meals per day. Yvonne developed a special educational methodology specifically to reach children and adolescents who suffered some type of psychological trauma, as the youth of the project are exposed to violence regularly. UNICEF has recognized the Uerê pedagogy as one of the six best in the world for children in vulnerable environments, especially refugees, which has led to international recognition. Known for her exceptional work in education and social activism, Yvonne will share the story of Projeto Uerê and then offer a chance for the audience members to ask questions.
