Past Events

Over the years, the American Society of Rio de Janeiro has hosted a variety of social, cultural, and community events that bring together locals, expats, families, and visitors in Rio. Past events have included holiday celebrations, networking happy hours, volunteer projects, cultural tours, speaker series, sporting event watch parties, family activities, and partnerships with international organizations throughout the city.

January Happy Hour

The year kicked off with a fun and welcoming January Happy Hour at La Carioca Cevicheria Quiosque in Ipanema. Friends, familiar faces, and newcomers from the international community came together for an evening of networking, conversation, and connection while enjoying great food, drinks, and the beachside atmosphere.

Movie Screening

American Society members attended a special cocktail and screening of Marty Supreme at Estação NET Gávea, hosted by Latin American Training Center in collaboration with several cultural and business organizations. The evening brought together leaders from culture, business, and entertainment for an inspiring night of networking and international collaboration. Adding to the excitement, Marty Supreme received 9 Oscar nominations, making the event even more memorable.

Super Bowl Watch Party

A lively Super Bowl watch party at Os Imortais Bar in Copacabana brought together Rio’s international community for an unforgettable evening of football, food, and connection. With a great turnout and an energetic atmosphere, the event celebrated one of the biggest traditions in American culture while creating new friendships and community connections in Rio.

Leme Stroll

A scenic stroll through Morro do Leme brought people together for a morning of sunshine, breathtaking coastal views, and community connection. The walk created an opportunity for both familiar faces and newcomers to connect while enjoying one of Rio’s most beautiful and peaceful outdoor spots.

St. Patrick's Day Happy Hour

The American Society of Rio and the British Society of Rio came together on March 17 for a lively St. Patrick’s Day Happy Hour filled with great conversation, green beer, and community spirit. Hosted at Mad Brew in Ipanema, the evening brought together a fun mix of members, newcomers, and Rio’s international community to celebrate the holiday, make new connections, and enjoy a festive night out together.

Easter Egg Hunt

A festive morning of family fun took place at Sociedade Germania, surrounded by a beautiful forest setting. The event featured an Easter egg hunt, crafts, face painting, balloon animals, games, and plenty of opportunities for families and friends to connect and celebrate together.

Wine & Cheese Tasting

A Wine & Cheese Night at Cave Nacional brought members together for a unique evening focused on Brazilian wines, artisanal cheeses, and local craftsmanship. Guests enjoyed a tasting of five Brazilian wines—including sparkling, white, and red varieties—paired with artisanal cheeses sourced from around Brazil. Hosted in the cozy boutique wine bar known for its unique Brazilian products, the event was guided by wine experts Karina and Marcelo alongside cheese specialist Tiago D., creating a relaxed and memorable experience for all who attended.

Art Gallery Tour

The American Society of Rio hosted a unique afternoon experience at Santa Teresa Hotel RJ - MGallery featuring the artwork of Annabelle Smith Bigno. The event began with a private tour of the hotel’s stunning art collection, followed by an intimate demonstration showcasing the creative process behind the paintings. Guests also participated in a guided NLP session designed to encourage connection and well-being. The evening concluded poolside at sunset, creating a memorable blend of art, mindfulness, and community.

Speaker Series: Sergio da Costa e Silva

A Speaker Series event featuring Sergio da Costa e Silva highlighted the impact of the renowned Música no Museu initiative, which has brought free musical performances to cultural spaces throughout Rio and around the world for nearly 30 years. Guests learned about the project’s continued growth, including the expansion of the Rio Harp Festival and the Rio Winds Festival. The evening also featured a special musical performance by Angelo Budega, adding a memorable cultural touch to the event. Música no Museu continues to offer multiple free concerts each month, helping make arts and culture accessible to the community.

Holiday Boat Cruise

Guests have enjoyed a scenic Schooner Boat Cruise on Guanabara Bay, taking in breathtaking views of Rio from the water while connecting with the international community. The afternoon combined sightseeing, relaxation, and socializing aboard a traditional schooner, creating a memorable experience in one of Rio’s most iconic settings.

Gastromotiva Volunteering

The American Society of Rio proudly partnered with Gastromotiva, a Rio de Janeiro nonprofit dedicated to fighting hunger and promoting social inclusion through food education and community outreach. Members participated in hands-on volunteer efforts, helping serve and distribute nutritious meals to vulnerable communities across the city while supporting Gastromotiva’s mission of dignity, education, and nourishment for all. Looking ahead, the American Society of Rio plans to continue this tradition of giving back by organizing regular monthly volunteer opportunities for members.

Thanksgiving Dinner at the JW Marriot

The American Society of Rio hosted a festive Thanksgiving Dinner at JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro, bringing together members, families, and guests to celebrate one of America’s most cherished traditions. Guests enjoyed a deluxe buffet featuring turkey, side dishes, desserts, and beverages in a warm and welcoming atmosphere that highlighted community, gratitude, and cultural connection in Rio de Janeiro.

Happy Hour events throughout Rio’s Zona Sul have become a popular way for members, guests, and the international community to come together and connect in a welcoming social setting. Hosted at a variety of local restaurants, bars, and gathering spots, these events bring together people from diverse backgrounds to build friendships, network, and enjoy Rio’s vibrant social scene in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Networking Events

The American Society of Rio regularly hosts professional networking events designed to bring together members of Rio’s international and local business communities for meaningful conversations, collaboration, and connection. Hosted at venues throughout the city, these gatherings create opportunities for professionals, entrepreneurs, and community members to build relationships, exchange ideas, and expand their networks in a welcoming and engaging environment. The American Society also partners with local organizations and businesses to help foster valuable professional and community connections across Rio de Janeiro.

Annual Pancake Breakfast at OLM American School

The annual Pancake Breakfast at Our Lady of Mercy School brings together members, families, and guests for a fun-filled morning of community, food, and connection. The event features a classic American-style breakfast, family-friendly activities, and an opportunity to celebrate traditions while strengthening ties within Rio’s international community.

Speaker Series

The Speaker Series brings together leaders from business, culture, education, diplomacy, the arts, and the nonprofit sector for engaging presentations and discussions throughout the year. These events provide members and guests with opportunities to learn from experienced professionals, exchange ideas, and connect with Rio’s international and local communities in an informative and welcoming environment.

World War II 80th Anniversary Ceremony

The American Society of Rio hosted a commemorative event honoring the 80th anniversary of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and its historic role in World War II alongside the United States and Allied forces. The ceremony featured remarks from Ryan Rowlands, Nemuel de Almeida Ramos, Eddie Sanchez, and Francisco Ferraz, reflecting on the legacy and bravery of the “Smoking Snakes.” The event also included a moving musical tribute performed by flutist Victor and trumpeter Anderson from the CATRio Project, creating a meaningful evening of remembrance, history, and international friendship.

4th of July BBQ

The annual 4th of July BBQ celebration brings together members, families, and guests to celebrate American Independence Day in Rio de Janeiro. Featuring classic American barbecue favorites, music, games, and community activities, the event provides a festive opportunity for Rio’s international community to come together and celebrate one of America’s most cherished traditions.
